NDYC Advocates for Revitalized Ports as Key to Equitable Wealth Distribution

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has commended the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for his exemplary leadership in addressing the proposed Tax Reform Bill. The NDYC praised his decision to suspend the bill’s processes and public hearings pending the conclusion of deliberations by a Senate Committee he established to engage the Attorney General of the Federation and other critical stakeholders. This action demonstrates a strong commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and justice in addressing matters that significantly impact Nigerians’ socio-economic realities.

The NDYC emphasized the importance of ensuring that tax reform outcomes reflect the principles of equity and inclusivity, ensuring no region or demographic is left behind. It called on the committee to prioritize justice and fairness in their deliberations, guaranteeing that every Nigerian benefits equitably from the nation’s wealth and opportunities, regardless of their geographic or socio-economic background.

The organization also highlighted the urgent need to revive the Warri and Calabar Ports, urging committee members, particularly Senator Heineken Lokpobiri representing the South-South region, to champion this cause. These ports, with their strategic advantages and capacity to reduce haulage distances, are vital for fostering regional development, decongesting existing ports, creating jobs, and ensuring balanced economic growth.

The NDYC further appealed to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) to establish consultative frameworks within their states to promote grassroots participation. By engaging citizens, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, the NGF can foster transparency and inclusivity, ensuring a reform process that resonates with Nigerians. The NDYC expressed confidence in the Senate’s ability to deliver a tax reform resolution that reflects justice and national interests.
